Hey Ya'll, It's Been a While

I've been a bit absent from the blogging world for a while...

Since March

But here's what's happened since then:

I had RQ preliminaries and made the top 10! (woo hoo)
Over the summer I had two jobs (Ive's and The Grand River Marketplace)
I also took two summer classes (Macro and Micro economics)
I became a board member of Team Michigan of the Transplant Games of America
The Rose Pageant came around... and I won
I'm as surprised as anyone that I won...
More to come about that adventure in a later post
I started my Sophomore year at the University of Michigan. GO BLUE!
I joined a sorority on campus
Now I'm a new mem of Alpha Gamma Delta
I got in contact with those involved in the transplant unit at the University of Michigan Health System
Now I'm helping with Be a Hero in the Big House

Aaaaaaand, that's about it
Now that I'm settled in back at school, hopefully I'll be able to fill everyone in a little bit more on what's going on as the 54th Jackson County RoseQueen.

It's been awhile

It's been about a month since I've last posted. I haven't forgotten about this, but I've kind of neglected it.

After Miss Stateline, I was a bit miffed about my year in pageantry. I only placed once in all 4 of my pageants. But, I really cannot complain. I won $1,150 and and there are some girls who have been competing longer than I have that have not placed even once. I am thankful, though, for everything that I've learned and all of the skills that I've acquired throughout my first year of MAO.

Rose pageant Prelims were postponed, but I'm very excited and very ready to get back on stage.

I want this to be my year.

Results

I was not very happy with my interview, but I feel very proud of how well I did in all other categories.

I am so thrilled to have received the People's Choice award.

Only a few months until Rose prelims!

5 days to go

I'm don't know if it's good that I'm not freaking out, or not...

I've been reading CNN for weeks now.
Practicing my walk.
working on answering questions and talking about my platform.
I've been eating right and working out.
but for some reason I don't think that, that's good enough.

This is my last chance this year to go to Miss Michigan 2013 and I would be so honored and thrilled if I was given this opportunity, even if it meant commuting to Edwardsburg (a solid 2 hours and 30 minutes away) every weekend.

AHHH maybe I'm freaking out a little now.

The Gift of Life

Today I saw what it really meant to give the gift of life. My mother donated her kidney to her father, my grandfather. Mulling around the waiting room gave me time to think about how much of a hero both my mother and grandfather are to me.

My mother gave one of the most valuable gifts, a new chance at living a longer healthier life. She didn't have to think twice about getting tested to see if she was a match. She knew it was what she wanted.

My grandfather is so strong and persistant. He has been constantly doing dialysis for over a year and has yet to give up hope that he will survive though many in his position do not.

I cannot tell you how much of an inspiration they are to me.

It's been awhile

I haven't posted in awhile because I've been a bit under the weather... To be more specific, I have double pink eye and a sinus infection. Thank goodness I didn't get this next week, or I would be looking pretty janky for the pageant. But while I have been sick, I have still been practicing and preparing. Two more girls were crowned this weekend, one of them is a UMich student... Go Blue, and I really hope to come home with a title.

A girl can dream.

Tap Intimidation

After watching Miss New York and Miss Oklahoma's tap dances over and over again, I'm starting to get worried that my tap dance won't be good enough to get me a high talent score. I've been practicing everyday and working to make my facial really energetic, I hope it will be enough.

One thing that bugs me about the Miss America Organization is that they don't let you talk to the judges about how they scored you. Where they gave you a higher score and a lower score. If they let the girls talk to the judges, or let us see the scoring sheets, it could really help us to hone our phases of competition. I just think feedback is one of the best ways to improve, not just guessing where you need to get better.

Oh well, I guess you can't really change the rules.

Becoming Normal

It's becoming more and more normal for me to do my pageant walk while I'm listening to my iPod in my apartment. I feel like a nerd when I realize it, but I really just do it without thinking.

My new favorite song is Scream and Shout by Will I Am and Brittany Spears. 1. because it's catchy 2. because that was the swimsuit song they used at Miss America. I really can't help but walk with an attitude when I listen to this song.

I really cannot wait for Miss Stateline because I just want to put on my heels and sassy walk.

Congrats to Miss New York!

I am so glad that I changed my talent to tap, because the tappers are going out strong! Our Miss America 2013 is one, Miss Michigan 2012, and hopefully Miss Stateline 2013 will be one too!

But Congratulations to Miss New York, Mallory Hagen. I absolutely loved her evening gown with the statement earrings. And her talent, OMG her talent! I honestly never had her picked, but I think all around she did an awesome job!

If anyone has a moment...

Check out this article posted in the huffington post about all of the things that Miss America contestants overcome to be on that stage on Saturday night. It's written by the chairman of the board Sam Haskell.

Miss America 2013 Votes for STEM

It's finally in

Yesterday both my talent costume and my evening gown came in. I got my talent dress mailed to me so I got to try it on, but I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to go pick up my dress. I really wanted my grandparents to go with me to pick up the dress since it was their gift to me. My grandpa said that he really wasn't into dress shopping, so I decided to pick it up and take it back home with me so that I can show them how much I really am thankful for this dress. I'm honestly just thankful for my family, friends, and MAO sisters that support me. This will be my last pageant in my first year of Miss America pageants. I have made so many great friends and learned so many amazing skills from this program. I can never say thank you enough.

First Day

I don't know if I'm more nervous for my new semester, or for Miss Stateline in Febru. This should be a fun hectic month.

Wish me luck!

$3,400

No, that is not the amount of money I have raised since posting about my donation page (so far posting that on every social media outlet I have an account on has amounted to a grand total of $0). That is the amount of money I accidentally charged to my mothers credit card the other day.

I wasn't online shopping, stealing her money, or other naughty things... Here's the story:

As the Stateline pageant gets closer, I'm starting to get more prepared by gathering all of my clothes, costumes, interview outfits, stuff of that sort. I have to be down in Edwardsburg the day before the pageant for rehearsal. It's a two hour drive so it's not an option to drive there, back, there, and back again. I decided to check out hotels that I could stay in for the night. Ms. Montgomery suggested the Holiday Inn Express in Mishawaka, (what?) Indiana. While trying to book my 1 night stay from February 1st to the 2nd, which would have only been a $90 charge, I accidentally made the reservation for February 1st to March 2nd... My mother got her credit card and entered all of the information. She only noticed the mistake after the charge was made.... the $3,400 charge!!!

OH SH*T!

We called the Holiday Inn Express company, the Mishawaka (again, what?) Holiday Inn Express, and my mom's credit card company... no one could say they could fix it...

OOOOOHHH SH*T!

They did say they would make a note on the credit card that the reservation was canceled but the man at the desk, Steve I think was his name, said that he didn't have the clearance to cancel the transaction on my mom's card, but his boss would do it on Monday...

Pshew!

Everything is hopefully going to get itself worked out tomorrow. If not, I really need to win Miss Stateline so I can pay my mom back for that charge.

My crazy life continues...

Please Help!

The deadline for my Children's Miracle Network donations is January 18th. That is a lot closer than I anticipated. I would really like some help raising all of this money. I am at 75% of my goal, $300 out of my $400 goal. I plan on doing a fundraiser as soon as I get back up to school, but I don't think 9 days is enough to raise $100.

I would be very very appreciative of any help!

Thank the Lord

I finally had enough inspiration and motivation to choreograph my tap dance. It needs some improving and a few tweaks here and there, but for the most part... it's done! Now it's time to practice, practice, practice!

I'm really excited to get my dress in, so I can start accessorizing. I think I'm going to use my big white earrings that I am in love with. I need some frilly white socks that my mother forced me to wear as a child. I also need to find some white gloves to wear.

ALSO, I need to figure out how I'm doing my hair. These bang are becoming a pain in the but to work with. Too long to wear in front, too short to pull back neatly. Hopefully they will grow out nicely in a month.

One Month to Go

AHHHHHHH!!! I have 31 days to get into shape, choreograph a tap routine, master a new hairdo, and find my way to Edwardsburg, MI.

I think tonight I'll start working out... or maybe just looking up workouts on pinterest. While I'm on pinterest, I might as well start looking up new up-dos to go with my new dress.

So much stuff to do and not enough time to do it.

But, my new talent dress should be coming in the next week or so. Once it does, I'll be sure to post a picture of it. A little hint: it definitely has a retro feeling to it. I'm thinking about sticking to the retro feeling throughout the pageant with hair and make up. I hope the judges will like it!
